My Cousin Rachel is one of eleven book series prints by Dian Rakyat that guided readers at the intermediate level. This book ranked seventh among eleven other titles. Book’s cover quite reflects the contents of the background story in 1800. The size is not too big and thin enough, so it can be a pocket book.

This book is retold by Margaret Tarner. The first printing by Dian Rakyat in 1990. Original prints by Heinemann, as English Language Teaching in 1980. Cover photograph by Chris Gilbert, illustrates a female figure wearing a vintage dress, standing at the edge of a garden pond at noon. In this book there are no color illustrations by Kay Dixey.

This book tells about the main character's life that also serves as writer of this novel. He was Philip Ashley. An orphan who looked after by his cousin, Ashley Ambrose who was very wealthy. Philip was Ambrose's heir. At the age of twenty-three Philip, Ambrose was forty years old and doctors said that the weather in winter was bad for Ambrose. Because of that, every winter Ambrose went to a drier country. Ambrose was going to Rome and Florence, at Italy. He always sends letter to Philip when he went in winter.

One time, Ambrose fell in love with his cousin who lives in Italy, Rachel, and preach to Philip that he had married Rachel. Philip was jealous. The longer the letters from Ambrose for him no longer comes. Until the last letter of Ambrose came: For God's sake, come quickly! Rachel, my torment, has won. I am dying. Come quickly, or it will from be too late.

From here the conflict of the story begins. Philip risks his lovely cousin assets for the sake of others. Crime and murder recounted by the author implied. The plot is very detailed, so the story becomes slow. Each chapter makes the reader more curious about the rest of it. This novel is also sharpening the reader’s ability to solve deeper problems.

Conclusion

This book has a charm to read by all ages. Especially for readers with intermediate levels of English ability. Illustrations clearly depict the existing situation and the story makes the reader is not bored. This novel is great for learning materials and habituation in the English language to students. Its small size and light weight can be carried easily, so not too much trouble all the circles of readers.
